Primary energy spectra of cosmic rays selected by mass groups in the knee region

چکیده

The KASCADE experiment measures the electron and muon number of extensive air showers in the knee region with high precision. From these data shower size spectra for electrons and muons are constructed. An analysis is presented in which electron and muon size spectra in three different zenith angle bins are analysed simultaneously. With a four component assumption for the mass composition of primary cosmic rays (hydrogen, helium, carbon and iron) and using unfolding methods taking into account shower fluctuations and experimental effects energy spectra of these mass groups in the range between 10 and 10 eV are reconstructed. Each energy spectrum shows a steepening of the index of the resulting power law with a knee-like structure. The positions of the individual knees suggest a rigidity dependence.

Energy spectrum and elemental composition of cosmic rays in the PeV region Recent results and future prospects of the KASCADE experiment

KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) is determining flux spectra for different primary mass groups to disentangle the knee feature of the primary cosmic-ray energy spectrum. The energy spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions suggests a rigidity dependence. To proof the rigidity...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Reconstruction of primary mass group energy spectra with KASCADE

The KASCADE-Grande experiment was designed for the measurement of extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays of the knee region, i.e. with energies between 0.5 PeV and 1 EeV. Main focus of the experiment is the precise determination of energy and composition of the primary cosmic rays, thus clarifying the nature of the knee. Data of the preceding KASCADE experiment have been used in a composi...

The composition of cosmic rays at the knee ( ∗ )

The solar system is permanently exposed to a vast flux of highly energetic and fully ionized atomic nuclei, the cosmic rays. Their energies extend from the GeV range to at least 10 eV. Over a wide range the energy spectrum follows a power law dN/dE ∝ E . The spectral index changes around 4 PeV from γ ≈ −2.7 to γ ≈ −3.1. This transition phenomenon has been reported for the first time in 1958 [1]...

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

Air Shower Measurements in the Primary Energy Range from PeV to EeV

Recent results of advanced experiments with sophisticated measurements of cosmic rays in the energy range of the so called knee at a few PeV indicate a distinct knee in the energy spectra of light primary cosmic rays and an increasing dominance of heavy ones towards higher energies. This leads to the expectation of knee-like features of the heavy primaries at around 100 PeV. To investigate in d...
